Trauma refers to an emotional response to a distressing or
disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope.
These events can be singular, such as a car accident, natural disaster, or physical assault, or they can be ongoing, such as abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence. Trauma can have a profound impact on a person's psychological, emotional, and physical well-being, often leading to a range of symptoms and difficulties in functioning.
There are a number of possible reactions to traumatic experience including:
Intrusive Thoughts
such as flashbacks and nightmares;
Avoidance
of people, places or situations that are reminders of the event;
Activation
such as feeling on edge or easily startled;
Emotional Dysregulation
which means having difficulty managing emotions, mood swings, or outbursts of anger or irritability;
Physical Symptoms
including headaches, stomachaches, muscle tension, or other physical complaints without a clear medical cause.
Effective treatment for trauma typically involves a combination of
therapeutic approaches tailored to the individual's needs.
